The Altai Mountain range is stretched up covering the territory of 4 countries: Mongolia, Russia, Kazakhstan and China.

The Mongolian part of Altai Mountain range called Mongolian Altai Mountain range and is a natural preserved area. In 1996, the National Reserve “Altai Tavan Bogd National Park” was founded and officially opens. In the territory of the Altai Mountains Tavan-Bogd there are many lakes and rivers such as Khoton Lake, Khurgan Lake, Dayan Lake, the river valley of the Khovd River, Khar Salaa, Tsagaan-Salaa, Songinot, and Yolt.
The glaciers are located at an altitude of 3,500-4,000 meters above sea level. The largest glaciers are the Potanin Glacier, Alexander Glacier, Greny Glacier. They stretch 16 kilometers in length and are the source of the Tsagaan River. The five highest peaks of Altai Tavan Bogd mountain are Khuiten peak 4374 meters, Friendship peak 4082 meters, Herdsman peak 4037 meters, Eagle peak 4068 meters, and Ulgiy peak 4050 meters. This trip takes 5 days in total. It takes one day to drive to the mountains and one day to return with 3 days of hiking and climbing.

Day 1 Arrival in Ulaanbaatar

Arrival at Ulaan Bataar airport, you will be met by our representative and, after checking in at the hotel, we will take you on a city sightseeing tour and for a welcome dinner. (Hotel/D)

Day 2 Ulaanbatar-Ulgii

Flight to Ulgii City, Bayan-Ulgii province, Western Mongolia, about 3 hours of flight. The population of this province is mostly Kazakh, with their own culture and language. At the airport you will be met your English-speaking guide, driver and expedition cook. Before lunch you will visit the town of Ulgii, seeing such sites as the local museum, the open-air market, and the mosque. After lunch we will drive to Tavan Bogd (Holy Five Peaks) National Park, Tsagaan Gol Valley.
The total trip will take about about 7 hours, with an overnight stay along the way in a tent camp (Tent/L/D).

Day 3 Hiking to the Tavan Bogd- Base Camp

Today we will hike 6 hours to the base camp of Tavan Bogd. Our luggage will be transported by camels, handled by the local people, they are friendly and helpful. The base camp is at an elevation of 3000 m. (Tent/B/L/D)

Day 4 Climbing to Malchin Peak

After breakfast we will start slowly walking for about an hour and then start climbing to Malchin Peak (4050 m), which is on the Mongolian side of the Russian border. Malchin Peak is the lowest of the Holy Five Peaks. The peak lays under the 3-rd category of complexity. It takes 6 to 7 hours to climb to the top of Malchin. Most of the climb will be on rocks, then back to camp to relax. (Tent/B/L/D)

Day 5 Return to the Oigor River (Oigor Valley)

Today we will hike back to the Oigor River valley and meet the drivers. (Tent/B/L/D)

Day 6 Return to Ulgii

We will drive 7 hours back to Ulgii. On the way we will visit with the Kazakh Eagle Hunters. Spend the night in your ger camp or hotel. (Ger or hotel/B/L/D)

Day 7 Return Flight to Ulaanbaatar

This morning we catch the return flight to Ulaanbataar. In arrival, transfer to your hotel. Free afternoon for shopping. (Hotel/B/L/D)

Twin or king size bed rooms in local hotels or Kazakh yurt in our Ger camp for a choice, with all needs met for comfort staying.

Meals

In Ulgii city, you have choice between restaurants with traditional Kazakh dishes, traditional Mongolian dishes, European and Turkish dishes. Everyday different taste. When you are in the countryside or a Festival site, our high skilled expedition chiefs are eager to cook your meals in place. If you are vegetarian or on a diet by your physician, restricted from some kinds of foods and beverages because of your health problems, just let us know about it. We choose and make a food specially for you.

Tour vehicles

This tour includes round-trip tickets to Ulgii and back. Regards to transport inside a province, rigid axle four wheel drive vehicles such as Russian made jeep UAZ 469, Russian made van UAZ 452 furgon, Japanese Landcruisers are used because of road condition and vast area of mountain ranges. We provide in accordance with group members and complexity of trip itself, Russian vans and Toyota Landcruisers for traveler and another van for luggage and cooking staff.

Weather condition in the area when you are planning your trip

Actual travelling season in Western Mongolia is from June to second half of October.

Also some specifically designed trips are organized during winter. The climate in mountainous area is very changeable. Up in the mountains you might see four seasons could change in one day. If you are hiking mountains area, take that in mind and pack your warmest clothes. Mountain climbing trips are made possible only when weather allows you. This is what we say force major. The luggage weight allowed by local air company is 15 kg per person. The luggage exceeding this weight is stated as excess luggage and paid separately.
