Altai Tavan Bogd National Park visits

Eagle festival tour packages also can be combined with a jeep and hiking trips to Altai tavan bogd National Park or the Khoton Khurgan lakes. The period of a year when the Eagle festival is organized, is usually not convenient to stay in tents in the Altai Tavan bogd National Park because of an extreme temperature condition. Vehicles reach to the National Park border passes located in Tsagaan gol and Oigor rivers relatively and 12-15km of hiking or horseback trip all the way to basecamp. The trip takes 3 days including driving to border passes and back to Ulgii city.

Day 1: Arrive in Ulaanbaatar, city tour

Flight to Ulan Baatar. At the airport, personal from our company will meet you. Hotel registrations and city sightseeing tours. Welcome meal. Staying in hotel (Hotel)

Accommodation: 5* hotel Meals: Lunch, Dinner

Day 2: Fly to Ulgii town

Flight to Ulgii, Bayan Ulgii province. The westernmost province in Mongolia. English speaking local guide, cook and driver will meet you. Hotel or ger camp is for your choice /hotel/ger B/L/D/

Accommodation: Local Hotel

Meals: Dinner

Day 3: Visit to Kazakh nomadic family.

6 hours of driving to Oigor river valley border pass. Meet Kazakh nomadic family and explore nomadic lifestyle. Kazakh meal for dinner. Accommodation in spare gers for tourists (Ger/Tent//B/L/D)

Day 4 Hike to the Tavan Bogd Base Camp   

Hike to the Tavan Bogd Base Camp for approximately five hours. Overnight in tents. Tavan bogd is the highest mountain range in Mongolia. It’s called Tavan bogd /The Holy Five/ because of five peaks, Huiten, Nairamdal, Malchin, Ulgii, Burged. There is 3 glaciers: Potanina, Alexandrea, and Granne. The longest glacier, Potanina is 20 km long and is a source for White water river /Tsagaan gol/  ( Tent/B/L/D)

Day 5 Climbing to Malchin Peak

After breakfast we will start slowly walking for about an hour and then start climbing to Malchin Peak (4050 m), which is on the Mongolian side of the Russian border. Malchin Peak is the lowest of the Holy Five Peaks. It takes 6 to 7 hours to climb to the top of Malchin. Most of the climb will be on rocks, then back to camp to relax. (Tent/B/L/D)

Day 6 Return to the White River (Tsagaan gol Valley)

Today we will hike down 15km to another border pass area, the Tsagaan gol valley. We will be hiking along the side of White River; the unique milk white water river starts from glacier.  Meet Tuvaan family, ethnic minority in Western Mongolia. (Tent/B/L/D)

  Day 7 Return to Ulgii

We will say goodbye to our Tuvan friends and take the 7-hour drive back to Ulgii. Spend the night in hotel. (Hotel/B/L/D)

Day 8-9 Golden Eagle Festival

These two days we will attend the Golden Eagle Festival according to program we provide. These 2 days you have a lot of interesting competitions that represents you the ability and training of eagle hunter and his/her eagle, Kazakh traditional horse games and more. Overnight accommodations will be the Ger Camp or hotel.  (Hotel/Ger/B/L/D).

Day 10 to Ulaanbaatar

This morning we catch the return flight to Ulaan Baatar. Upon arrival transport to your hotel. Free afternoon for shopping (Hotel/B/L/D)

Day 11 Departure from Ulaan Baatar Airport.

Is the September Eagle Festival Tour suitable for you?

On the September Golden Eagle Festival Tour, you will travel to Ulgii, a central town of Bayan Ulgii province, located 1600 km from Ulaanbaatar. To save time and keep the driving short, you will fly to Khovd town at the beginning of the tour and back to Ulaanbaatar from Ulgii town when the trip ends. Due to the remoteness and infrastructure, accommodations and restaurants are basic in Ulgii. The Eagle Festival Tour does not include long driving, except for 240 km paved roads driving from Khovd to Ulgii town on the first day. Golden Eagle Festival takes place 30 km out of Ulgii town. September Eagle Festival size is smaller compared to the October Eagle Festival. 40-50 eagle hunters compete in the September festival, while 60-70 eagle hunters participate in October Eagle Festival. The September Eagle Festival’s advantage is that the audience can see and photograph the events from a closer distance.

You will dine at local restaurants in Ulgii and have a picnic lunch or eat in ger food courts at the Eagle Festival site. Vegetarians and restricted diet travelers should inform of the dietary requirements before arrival in Mongolia. We will arrange the meals accordingly. We will supply two 0.5L bottles of water a day. September weather during the Eagle Festival

The 2024 Golden Eagle Festival takes place on 16 and 17 September. Therefore, the tour departs Ulaanbaatar on 14 September and returns to Ulaanbaatar on 18 September. It occasionally snows in the Altai mountains in September. You should expect -2°C to +10°C during daylight and below 0°C at night/in the evening/ morning. Therefore, we suggest you bring warm clothes suitable for a little below 0⁰C, including your woolen hats and gloves. Please check the DISCOVERY TOUR PACKING LIST and pack accordingly. Also, consider the free luggage allowance on domestic flights – 15 kg per person, including the handbag.
