Horseback Riding Tour Grand Altai  Western Mongolia

These 13 days of horseback riding trip is one of the most challenging, but worthy trips in our company package. All the way to Altai Tavan bogd mountains we get surrounded by very beautiful landscapes with meadow forests, crystal clear lakes and snow-capped cliffs.  The trip is supported with camels and highly experienced herdsmen guides.  Historical sites, balbals and petroglyphs that belong to the Turkic-Scythe empire age also are on the way of our trip.

You will ride for approximately 6 to 8 hours each day and cover up to 25 – 30 kilometers (about 15 miles) per day.

Day 1 Arrival in Ulaan Baatar
At Ulaan Baatar airport, our company personal will meet you, after checking in at the hotel, we will take you on a city sightseeing tour and for a welcome dinner.

Day 2 Flight to Ulgii city 
You will fly to Ulgii City, in the Bayan-Ulgii province in Western Mongolia, about 3 hours of flight. The population of this province is mostly Kazakh, with their own culture and language. At the airport you will meet your English-speaking guide, as well as your driver and expedition cook. Drive towards Hoton Hurgan Lake where we meet herdsmen guides and get ready for our adventure. Day 3 Hoton Hurgan Lake

We will start our ride to the Hoton Hurgan Lakes. The landscape around the lakes is stunning, with forests and snow-capped mountains. Camel support will follow us (Tent/B/L/D)

Day 4   Aral Tolgoi

We will ride on the north Shore of Khoton Lake to Aral Tolgoi. Camel support will follow us. (Tent/B/L/D)

Day 5 Tsagaan Us River Valley

We will ride to the Tsagaan Us River Valley. Camel support will follow us. (Tent/B/L/D)

Day 6 Baabgain hondii

On this day we will ride across on the highest mountain pass with continued camel support. (Tent/B/L/D)

 Day 7 Har salaa

Today our ride will take us to Shivet Uul Mountain. On the way we will enjoy the spectacular beauty of the snow-capped Altai Mountain range with its glaciers. The lush meadows between the mountains are carpeted with wild and sweet-smelling flowers. On this part of the excursion, we may have the luck to see wild ibex. We will continue with camel support and overnight again in a tent. (Tent/B/L/D)

Day 8  White River Valley

 On this day we will ride to the White River Valley where we will visit a Tuvan family and be introduced to their Shaman religion. Camel support will follow us. (Tent/B/L/D)

 Day 9 Base camp of Tavan Bogd

 Today we will ride 18 km to the base camp of Tavan Bogd. Our luggage will be transported by camels, handled by the local Tuvan people, they are friendly and helpful. On the way you can see the ice peaks of the Potanin and Alexander Glaciers. The base camp is at an elevation of 3000 m. Camel support will follow us. (Tent/B/L/D)

Day 10 Malchin Peak (4050 m)

Following a glacier exploration, we will climb the Malchin Peak (4050 m) on the Mongolian and Russian border. The Malchin Peak is the lowest of the Holy Five Peaks and takes 6 to 7 hours to climb. Camel support will wait for us at basecamp. (Tent/B/L/D)

Day 11 Oigor River

We will ride north to the Oigor River where we visit a Kazakh family in their summer camp and experience their customs and culture. They will introduce us, and you can taste their locally made milk products which play such an important role in their traditional diet. At this point passenger cars will arrive from Ulgii. Day 12 Drive back to Ulgii city

We will drive back to Ulgii and visit the local Mosque, open air market, museum, and shop for local art and handicrafts. You will have the choice to stay overnight in our ger camp or hotel (Hotel/Ger/B/L/D)

Day 13 Return flight to Ulaanbaatar with farewell dinner. (Hotel/B/L/D

Is the Tour suitable for you?

Are you a horseback rider? How long can you ride a horse? If you can do long rides and the health allows you doing this type of adventure trip with elements of also hiking and climbing, the trip is for you. But if you have special plans to travel, feel free to chat with our manager to plan your own trip.


Twin or king size bedrooms in local hotels or Kazakh yurt in our Ger camp for a choice, with all needs met for comfort staying.  Travelling in the nature, we set our tents, provided by our company.


In Ulgii city, you have choice between restaurants with traditional Kazakh dishes, traditional Mongolian dishes, European and Turkish dishes. Everyday different taste. When you are in the countryside or a festival site, our high skilled expedition chiefs are eager to cook your meals in place.  If you are vegetarian or on a diet by your physician, restricted from some kinds of foods and beverages because of your health problems, just let us know about it. We choose and make a food specially for you.


Our experienced English-speaking guide-translators will guide you through whole expedition and lead you through the rich cultural and natural heritages here in Bayan-Ulgii.

Tour vehicles

This tour includes round-trip tickets to Ulgii and back. Regards to transport inside a province, rigid axle four-wheel drive vehicles such as Russian made jeep UAZ 469, Russian made van UAZ 452 furgon, Japanese Landcruisers are used because of road condition and vast area of mountain ranges. We provide in accordance with group members and complexity of trip itself, Russian vans and Toyota Landcruisers for traveler and another van for luggage and cooking staff.

Weather condition in the area when you are planning your trip.

Actual travelling season in Western Mongolia is from June to second half of October.

Also, some specifically designed trips are organized during winter. The climate in mountainous area is   very changeable.  Up in the mountains you might see four seasons could change in one day. If you are hiking mountains area, take that in mind and pack your warmest clothes. Mountain climbing trips are made possible only when weather allows you. This is what we say force major. The luggage weight allowed by local air company is 15 kg per person. The luggage exceeding this weight is stated as excess luggage and paid separately.
