Mongolian Altai trekking tour

This trip is designed for hiking enthusiast group of tourists. Long distance of hiking with high hill climbing the elements of more sporty type of travel. But the beauty of a unique nature and presence of a historical places make this trip worth of trying. On the way to Altai Tavan Bogd Mountain, you hike through beautiful forests, shore of lake, two distinctive flowing rivers of White River and Rashaant river at Araal hill. Hiking through the pine forest of White River valley, you see the most picturesque blue lake that has a form of heart.  Pass the highest and yet hardest mountain pass Tahilt towards the Shiveet mountain. In Shiveet mountain there is a complex of petroglyphs aging to the Scythes age. And towards Tavan bogd, the highest mountain in Mongolia.

Day 1 
Today arrival in Ulaan Baatar, you will be met by our representatives, and, after checking in at your hotel, we will take you on a city sightseeing tour and a welcome dinner. (Hotel/D)

Day 2 
You will fly to Ulgii City, in the Bayan-Ulgii province of Western Mongolia. The majority of the population of this region is Kazakh, with their own culture and own language. At the local airport, you’ll meet your English-speaking guide, driver and expedition cook. 6 hours of driving towards Khoton Lake, stopping for lunch on the way. Stay overnight at the camping site in the tent. Here at the Biluut hill, you will find ancient rock carvings of Turkic origin, 1500-2000 years old. Total driving time about 6 hours. (Tent /L/D)

Day 3
Today we start our long-distance hiking adventure. Hike through the Khoton Lake shore towards the Aral Tolgoi /Aral hill/. There we get acquainted with an unique nature creativity; Two rivers flow parallel as white and black. White river and Rashaant river flows 500m parallel before it becomes fully solved. 6 hours of hiking. We stay in camp just nearby the White River valley. (Tent /B/L/D)

Day 4
Today we will visit Kazakh families to right side of valley. Explore lifestyle of Kazakh herder families. They will support our hiking with their camels as a porter. Vans will go back to Ulgii. We start hiking up the White River valley towards the Bear valley with camels following us. Overnight at camp site. Total 5 hours of hiking (Tent /B/L/D)

Day 5
Cross the highest pass. Camel support. Total hiking time: 7 hours. (Tent /B/LD)

Day 6
Hike to Shiveet Uul Mountain, with it’s stunningly beautiful blue lakes and petroglyphs. The petroglyphs complex of Shiveet Khairkhan mountain is one of the biggest in terms of area. (Tent /B/L/D)

Day 7
Hike to White River Valley National Park border pass.  We will have a chance to visit Tuvan people, who are a separate ethnic and cultural group within Mongolia, live a nomadic life and practice Shamanism. Total hiking time: 6 hours (Tent /B/L/D)

Day 8
Today we will hike up 18km to the base camp of the Tavan Bogd. Camel supports from the Tuvan people. We see Holy five mountains as well as glaciers on the way to Basecamp from 5-6km away. The average altitude of basecamp area is 3000 meter above sea level. (Tent /B/L/D)

Day 9
Hiking through the Potanina glacier. Explore the glacier and start point of white-water river. (Tent /B/,L/D)

Day 10
Climbing to Malchin Peak /4050 meter above sea level/, the lowest of the Holy Five Peaks, is on the Mongolia and Russian border. The climb takes 6 to 7 hours, all the way to the top of Malchin. Back in camp after the climb, we’ll relax! (Tent /B, L,D)

Day 11
Leisure/Free day. (Tent /B/L/D)

Day 12
Hike north to Oigor River National Park border pass. Cars will be arrived from Ulgii and will be waiting for us. Camel support. The hike takes 5-6 hours (Tent /B/L/D)

Day 13
We drive back to Olgii. On the way we’ll visit Eagle Hunters and a nomad family. Overnight at your hotel or ger camp (ger/hotel /B/L/D)

Day 14
Return flight to Ulaan Baatar, farewell dinner. (B/L/D)

Day 15
Leisure day in Ulaan Baatar. (Hotel/L/D)

Is the Tour suitable for you?

This trip is designed for nature enthusiast and hiker with its high physical ability.  The daily hiking distance varies from 15 to 25 kilometers of mountainous places.

Accommodation

The ger camps and hotels are in local standards and for twin share.

Meals

You will dine at local restaurants in Ulgii and have a picnic lunch or eat in ger food courts at the Eagle Festival site. Vegetarians and restricted diet travelers should inform of the dietary requirements before arrival in Mongolia. We will arrange the meals accordingly. We will supply two 0.5L bottles of water a day. Providing one large bottle (1.5 liters) of water instead of 2 small bottles is available upon request. More information about the Mongolia meals

Tour vehicles

The tour includes a round-way domestic flight to western Mongolia. Regarding the land transport, the September Eagle Festival Tour was designed with four wheels driving Russian vans, driven by experienced, friendly, and good mechanic-drivers. Different car types are available upon request for private tours. You may check the travel vehicle details at Mongolia transportation.

Weather

The 2023 Golden Eagle Festival takes place on 16 and 17 September. Therefore, the tour departs Ulaanbaatar on 14 September and returns to Ulaanbaatar on 18 September. It occasionally snows in the Altai mountains in September. You should expect -2°C to +10°C during daylight and below 0°C at night/in the evening/ morning. Therefore, we suggest you bring warm clothes suitable for a little below 0⁰C, including your woolen hats and gloves. Please check the DISCOVERY TOUR PACKING LIST and pack accordingly. Also, consider the free luggage allowance on domestic flights – 15 kg per person, including the handbag.
