Kazakh Nomads Homestay and Eagle Festival 2023

ITINERARY

Day 01 Flight to Ulan Baatar. Company personal meet you at the airport. After checking in at your hotel, we will take you on a city sightseeing tour and a welcome dinner. (Hotel/D)

 Day 02 Ulaanbaatar – Ulgii.

You will fly to Ulgii City, in the Bayan-Ulgii province of Western Mongolia. At the local airport, you’ll meet your English-speaking guide, driver and expedition cook. After lunch driving 1.5 hours on a van to eagle hunting Kazakh family (/L. D)

Day 03-04 Stay with Nomadic family

Those two days we will spend with Kazakh family. Nomads usually get up very early to take care of their livestock. Explore nomadic lifestyle and taste their traditional cuisine.

These days you have a chance to be a part of nomadic lifestyle, help herdsmen to look after their animals, milking the goats and cows, try to make Kazakh traditional dairy products of your own helping housewife. Also talk with eagle hunter through your English-speaking guide about how they train their eagles and explore eagle training on a horseback with eagle hunter.  (Ger/B/L/D)

Day 05-06 Return to Ulgii: Eagle’s Festival

These two days we’ll attend the Golden Eagle Festival!  Festivities begin with the hunter’s parade displaying their hunting outfits, accessories and traditional dress.   These two days you explore eagle training competitions as well as Kazakh traditional horse games. Also, Mongolian archery and camel race will be organized as specified in a program. (Overnight Ger camp or Hotel) (B/L/D)

Day 07 In the morning or in the afternoon, we catch the return flight to Ulaanbaatar, and transfer to your hotel.

Background

Is the September Eagle Festival Tour suitable for you?

On the September Golden Eagle Festival Tour, you will travel to Ulgii, a central town of Bayan Ulgii province, located 1600 km from Ulaanbaatar. To save time and keep the driving short, you will fly to Khovd town at the beginning of the tour and back to Ulaanbaatar from Ulgii town when the trip ends. Due to the remoteness and infrastructure, accommodations and restaurants are basic in Ulgii. The Eagle Festival Tour does not include long driving, except for 240 km paved roads driving from Khovd to Ulgii town on the first day. Golden Eagle Festival takes place 30 km out of Ulgii town. September Eagle Festival size is smaller compared to the October Eagle Festival. 40-50 eagle hunters compete in the September festival, while 60-70 eagle hunters participate in October Eagle Festival. The September Eagle Festival’s advantage is that the audience can see and photograph the events from a closer distance.

Accommodation

Twin or king size bed rooms in local hotels or Kazakh yurt in our Ger camp for a choice, with all needs met for comfort staying. In the countryside, stay with family, sharing one ger.

Meals

In Ulgii city, you have choice between restaurants with traditional Kazakh dishes, traditional Mongolian dishes, European and Turkish dishes. Everyday different taste. When you are in the countryside or a Festival site, our high skilled expedition chiefs are eager to cook your meals in place.  If you are vegetarian or on a diet by your physician, restricted from some kinds of foods and beverages because of your health problems, just let us know about it. We choose and make a food specially for you.

Our experienced English-speaking guide-translators will guide you through whole expedition and lead you through the rich cultural and natural heritages here in Bayan-Ulgii.

Tour vehicles

This tour includes round-trip tickets to Ulgii and back. Regards to transport inside a province, rigid axle four wheel drive vehicles such as Russian made jeep UAZ 469, Russian made van UAZ 452 furgon, Japanese Landcruisers are used because of road condition and vast area of mountain ranges. We provide in accordance with group members and complexity of trip itself, Russian vans and Toyota Landcruisers for traveler and another van for luggage and cooking staff.

Weather condition in the area when you are planning your trip.

The 2023 Golden Eagle Festival takes place on 16 and 17 September. Therefore, the tour departs Ulaanbaatar on 14 September and returns to Ulaanbaatar on 18 September. It occasionally snows in the Altai mountains in September. You should expect -2°C to +10°C during daylight and below 0°C at night/in the evening/ morning. Therefore, we suggest you bring warm clothes suitable for a little below 0⁰C, including your woolen hats and gloves. Please check the DISCOVERY TOUR PACKING LIST and pack accordingly. Also, consider the free luggage allowance on domestic flights – 15 kg per person, including the handbag.
